Design, Learning, Collaboration and New Media — A Co-Evolutionary HCI Perspective

چکیده

This paper focuses on creating a new understanding of design, learning and collaboration (as fundamental human activities) and their support with innovative computational media and technologies. A coevolutionary HCI perspective explores the dialectical relationship between (a) the unique potential of computational media to create true innovations impacting and transforming design, learning, and collaboration by transcending "gift-wrapping" approaches and (b) how a deep understanding of design, learning, and collaboration creates innovative demands and design criteria for future generations of HCI systems.

Co-evolution of Learning, New Media, and New Learning Organizations

Our research at the Center for Lifelong Learning & Design (L3D) over the past two decades has been focused on creating a new understanding of learning, new media, and new learning organizations. Our co-evolutionary perspective explores the dialectical relationship between: • how a deep understanding of learning (specifically: lifelong learning, self-directed learning, and informal learning) cre...

Learning through Game Making: An HCI Perspective

One of the areas of Game-Based Learning (GBL) that has been attracting considerable interest in recent years is digital game making, whereby learners play games but also design, construct and share them as active participants in a learning community. Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is a critical aspect of processes and tools within game making, and plays a key role in ensuring that learning ex...

Designing a Mix of Synchronous and Asynchronous Media for VMT

The challenges of designing computer support for education have shifted considerably in recent years, with, e.g., the rapid growth of the Web, online learning and social networking. New human-computer interaction (HCI) design approaches, methods, tools and theories are now required to analyze and understand interactions and learning of online groups. This chapter first reviews a number of issue...

An insider perspective on community gains: A subjective account of a Namibian rural communities' perception of a long-term participatory design project

Community-based co-design takes place within a communal value system and opens up a new debate around the principles of participation and its benefits within HCI4D and ICTD projects. This study contributes to a current gap of expression of participants’ gains, especially from an indigenous and marginalised rural communities’ perspective. We have collected community viewpoints concurrently over ...

Inciting Curiosity: Design students and HCI

The paper argues that inciting curiosity is the key educational requirement in teaching designers who wish to participate in HCI product development and research. An education case story is presented which illustrates the introduction of usability lab work into a course primarily concerned with ‘creative’ art and design approaches to designing interactive media and products. The novelty of eval...
